EVENT DESCRIPTIONS Picnic Trials (February/March): These are one-day events with Open, Qualifying and Derby field trial stakes offered along with Puppy stakes (under 7 months of age and 7-12 months). Dogs may run “in contention” (and compete for placements and ribbons) or run their stake for training purposes (and use training aids and corrections if needed). In addition, those that primarily run hunt tests may have the test modified to more simulate a hunt test. Sign up for these events are the morning of the trial from 8:00-8:30 a.m. - cost ranges from $5 for puppies to $15 for Open and Qualifying. We look forward to having you and your dog(s) join us. Come on out, ask lots of questions and get training! Hunt Test(April): An American Kennel Club licensed event. Hunt tests differ from field trials in that dogs are judged against a standard of performance rather than competing against the other dogs. The tests will more simulate hunting conditions, with shorter distances than most field trial tests. Three levels may be run - Junior, Senior and Master. Junior is single marks on land and water. Senior is double marks and single blind retrieves. Master is multiple marks and blinds, with an advanced level of training required. Dogs performing to the standard at a given test will receive a qualifying score, along with a ribbon. AKC Hunt Test (JH, SH, MH) titles will be awarded upon achieving the required number of qualifications. Field Trials (May/September): An America Kennel Club licensed event. Field trials are retriever competitions, with four stakes run at most trials - Open, Amateur, Qualifying and Derby. Dogs are judged and compete against each other with dogs eliminated after each series (usually four series per stake). Derby is for dogs age 6 months to 2 years, with tests consisting of single and double marks. Qualifying is for dogs over 6 months, with marking tests, double and triples, and blind retrieves also included. If a dog wins two Qualifying stakes it may no longer run this stake. Open and Amateur are similar in nature, but only amateur handlers may handle dogs in the Amateur state. These are the most advanced levels of retriever work, with multiple marks (2-4 birds) and challenging blind retrieves - all with distances that may be as much as 400 yards. Dogs may earn the coveted AKC titles of Field Champion (FC) and Amateur Field Champion (AFC) by accumulating the required points (depending upon placement). Judges of all field stakes may award 1st through 4th place (earning ribbons, trophies and All-Age points) along with some Judges’ Award of Merit ribbons.
